New version of CMS ActiveContent in the Amway Business Info service and more

In 2014, more users chose mobile devices over desktop solutions for Internet access. 50 percent of Polish Internet traffic is generated by mobile devices. The Global Web Index indicates that 80 percent of Internet users own a smartphone.

The mobile revolution did not fail to leave a mark on Amway - world leader in direct sales. The business information service that allows for smooth and easy communication between partners across 29 European markets required an update in Internet access trends. In order to achieve this goal, Amway chose ActiveContent Next, a modern, enterprise class CMS created by e-point.

New times bring new challenges

The section containing business information, which can be found on Amway’s site is available to all logged in users. Its purpose is to exchange information between the company and its distributors. It includes new entries about the company’s latest products, special offers, documents, how-to and training videos, and chosen press articles, for example: from the top economic and business newspapers.

The previous Amway’s content management service (CMS) was developed in 2011. However, the solution needed to be brought up to date with the newest technological trends. That is why Amway decided to refresh its web service through the implementation of the ActiveContent Next CMS, which allowed the site to be created in RWD (Responsive Web Design). From now on, the displayed content automatically adjusts itself to fit the window size.

Technology used

e-point CMS

e-point CMS supports Responsive Web Design, which is an approach to web design in which all pages are automatically adjusted to the size of the device screen and to the web browser used.

e-point’s proprietary CMS solution enables effective and comfortable content management and editing. The website’s pages are compiled with ready-to-use components that resemble building blocks. An extensive authorization system, in turn, makes it possible for numerous editors to work on different parts of the website, or to order the selected tasks from outside agencies.

Efficient data migration, dozens of system upgrades

For the company to start using the new system a migration of more than 19 thousand pages (in total: on 29 markets) was needed. At the same time, the client was adamant about keeping the visual and aesthetic coherence with the current version of the site. Especially for the project, e-point developed an automatic tool that compared screenshots and the HTML code before and after the migration. The whole operation was also supervised by a special group of content quality inspectors.

"It was a great challenge. Not only from an editorial perspective. We needed an uninterrupted flow of information between Editors, Front-End Developers and Programmers".

"Front-End Developers made precise and complicated amendments in the HTML/CSS/JS codes, which were later translated by editors to other markets/languages on corresponding sites. Later, the Programmers fixed the CMS errors found by the Editors. The new system had to be connected to the new e-commerce platform and the remaining Amway sites. At the same time, the migration had to be done live, while the platforms were still online and operational – for a corporation the size of Amway turning off the IT infrastructure even for a short period of time would mean enormous financial losses. Everything was completed in three months", says Agata Imielińska.

- Implementing ActiveContent Next allowed us to build a new, more efficient and functional file library with the help of one of the most modern technologies for creating web applications on the market- Ember.js - said Łukasz Krukowski, e-point’s System Architect responsible for the design of the new solution - The library contains hundreds of files divided into categories such as: advertising resources, forms, etc. Now, Amway’s partners can easily find all the information that they need and more efficiently go about their daily tasks.System messages were translated into all of the 28 supported languages. This posed a few problems. Words in different languages have different length. They also require different alphabets. To manage the translations we used a language localization platform L10nwhich was made by our company. Thanks to RWD, editors don’t have to put in the same content twice, as it was done before with independent site structures for desktop and light (mobile). Once you put it in, the content is available on every mobile and stationary device. We therefore eliminated the biggest thorn in the editor’s side - said Łukasz Krukowski.

Multilevel access

Because of a complex vertical and horizontal structure, Amway has a permission management system for displaying and browsing of web pages and other elements of the web portal.

- Currently, the platform hosts 150 different user profiles and attributes - said Łukasz Krukowski - That is why, the author can precisely pick which group of users he wants to address with the information of his choice.

Depending on the target group, you can edit every item of the menu, information in the given section or the list of actions. Regardless of the chosen group or related preferences, the website has to seamlessly adjust itself to fit the screen size, and therefore look the same on every device.

More satisfied customers

The effects could be immediately seen after the implementation. In February 2016, the number of users who connect to Amway Business Info via mobile devices was precisely 13 percent. In May, the number increased to 20 percent.

"We are satisfied with the project. On the one hand, we made the work of our editors a lot easier and we helped them to economize on their time. On the other hand, the project had a good influence on the user experience".
