How does a responsive website work?

On desktops
and laptops

Initially, a RWD website looks similar to a traditional website when viewed on large screens (TV, desktops, laptops). However the site's width is not fixed but flexible to make use of the whole area of a screen. A RWD website is not restricted to a narrow column with wide white margins on the Full HD display.

If you want to make your existing website responsive you probably need a new project. ActiveContent offers you a great opportunity to create a new modern layout and information architecture (AI) following current trends on the Web.

On tablets

Tablets are the primary devices where you can see an RWD "magic" in action. Images fill the entire width of the screen (in contrast to desktops where text is wrapped around images). Font sizes are adjusted to screen size to it remain legible, even though it is viewed on a smaller device.

Widgets leverage the touch screens functionality of the tablet. For example, photo galleries and carousels are controlled by a hand gesture called a "swipe".

On smartphones

A mobile version of a website is usually equipped with a hidden navigation menu, displayed after clicking on a dedicated button. The amount of content is limited so that users can find key information quickly with a few finger taps as possible.

With mobile websites, the number of multimedia elements is also reduced. Images are optimized for mobile devices in terms of resolution and file size.
